Senior Scholarships

The Bristol Virginia Public Schools Education Foundation has allocated funds for graduating seniors for merit and need-based college scholarships.

 

The scholarships may be used for expenses in any accredited two or four-year college, university, business school, or technical/trade school. Factors in consideration are the candidate's participation in extracurricular activities, demonstrable financial need, as well as participation in community service projects.

Terms/Eligibility

Eligibility​
 

  • Applicant must be a candidate for graduation from Virginia High School.

  • Applicant must be enrolled or expected to be enrolled in a post-graduate program by the fall of the current school year.

  • Applicant must have a minimum of a 2.0 Grade Point Average and complete the necessary forms furnished by the scholarship committee.  A reference will be completed on each applicant by a guidance counselor and/or a principal.

  • The scholarship may be used for expenses in any accredited two or four-year college or university, business school, trade or technical school approved by the scholarship committee.

  • Applicant must exhibit leadership, citizenship, and ambition.

  • (Rex Gearheart Memorial Scholarship only) Applicant must have a household income below $50,000.

 

In accordance with Internal Revenue Service regulation:  Inurement/Private Benefit Charitable Organizations-

“A section 501(c)(3) organization must not be organized or operated for the benefit of private interests, such as the creator or the creator's family, shareholders of the organization, other designated individuals, or persons controlled directly or indirectly by such private interests. No part of the net earnings of a section 501(c)(3) organization may inure to the benefit of any private shareholder or individual. A private shareholder or individual is a person having a personal and private interest in the activities of the organization.”

 

Therefore, the following are ineligible to apply and/or receive the BVPS Education Foundation Scholarships:

  • Family members of current BVPS Education Foundation Board members and after a BVPS Education Foundation Board Member leaves the Board, a period of two (2) years must occur before their child/children/grandchildren, nieces/nephews, sisters/brothers would be eligible to apply

  • Family members of current School Board Members

  • Family members of current School System Administrators

        

APPLICATION MUST BE FILLED OUT COMPLETELY—RESUMES WILL BE ACCEPTED BUT SHOULD NOT BE USED IN PLACE OF AN APPLICATION.

 

Financial Details
 

  • Payment shall be made in the form of a check payable to the approved post-graduate program.  In the event a student withdraws during the term, an effort will be made to recover any unused portion.

  • Notification of acceptance from the post-graduate program the recipient will be attending will be required to process the check.

  • Recipient may accept other scholarships or financial aid.

 

Procedures for Selecting Recipients

  1.  Notice of availability of and regulations governing this scholarship will be sent to the guidance counselor of Virginia High School.

  2. Applications shall be returned to the guidance department no later than the deadline.

  3. Recipients will be awarded the scholarship at the annual Senior Luncheon.
